At Surelock McGill, we pride ourselves on successfully designing, certifying and manufacturing locking solutions to operate in unique ways and often in the harshest of environments.

For decades architects, engineers and specifiers have trusted that, when other door hardware companies shy away from a difficult task, Surelock McGill will always rise to the occasion.

CUSTOMER CASE STUDY:

Krieger Speciality Products

Last year, Krieger Speciality Products requested help from us to provide a pressure door solution for one of their customers projects that had diametrically opposing requirements.

The task? Supply a heavy-duty speciality door that will stay closed (secure) when exposed to negative and cyclic pressures of a severe tornado – similar to the requirements of a FEMA 361 door.  The opposing design challenge of this project was the requirement that the door also must open at a specified internal building pressure in the event of a catastrophic failure of the steam pressure relief systems.

Surelock McGill has been protecting doors from opening under wind, air, and water pressure for decades. This was the first time we were asked to hold a door against an external threat, and then open at a specific pressure because of a building’s internal positive pressure event.
After a series of design iterations and pre-production analysis, the final locking system was ready for internal testing.

Surelock McGill’s engineers and technicians used a hydraulic press and developed a custom test fixture to repeatedly verify the pressure resistance and pressure opening forces on the strike to withstand the specified external pressure, and then release at the specified internal pressure.

Once the internal testing was completed, a single-point Slimline surface mounted locking system with a D15 enhanced blast guide bracket was specified. The final phase of the test program for the custom designed surface mounted pressure strike was completed and witnessed on a production door and frame at the customer’s test lab.

The door and hardware were subjected to over a dozen additional pressure tests until the proper pressure holding and release levels were verified. Thanks to co-operation between Surelock McGill and Krieger Speciality Products, the Slimline lock and customized pressure strike package was successfully designed, validated, manufactured, and delivered to the field.
