Surelock McGill has been providing security and life safety hardware to industrial and petrochemical sites for decades. During that time there have been many changes and improvements in operational requirements, but the fact remains that their employees’ safety is priority number one.
A common requirement in many industrial areas are blast resistant buildings where employees can shelter in place during an industrial accident like a fire, explosion, or harmful gas leak.
These buildings are equipped with blast resistant doors utilizing air-tight gaskets and a HVAC system with positive pressure to protect workers during an event. The weight of these doors, the gaskets, and the positive air pressure can create an environment where the doors can be difficult to open and close while maintaining single motion egress and accessibility for disabled employees.
To meet this particular challenge, we upgraded the decades old design of our traditional panic escape system to include a motorized bolt retraction feature, working alongside our heavy duty SMP Automatic Door Operator for a tidy, customizable, and retrofittable solution.

The updated lock design provided the installers the ability to quickly upgrade the hardware using the existing mounting holes in the door, whilst the small footprint of the ADO enabled it to be easily installed onto the header of the door frame using our supplied mounting template.
The ADO’s are customizable via a handheld programmer so that each door can be set dozens of parameters, configured to ensure the best possible operation at each opening to combat pressure seals, air flow, or wind.
The end result is a clean looking and customizable solution that provides automatic operation of a heavy blast door with the push of a button. Furthermore, it has allowed the installers to maintain the blast resistance of the opening and single motion egress in the event of power or system failure.
