Surelock McGill products, already with a large presence in tunnels around the world, are now manufactured completely from stainless steel as standard making them more suitable than ever for highly corrosive environments. Within these environments, access solutions often require a combination of high-performance features to ensure reliable operation, whilst simultaneously able to withstand the high pressures that occur from passing tunnel traffic. See below for some of our bespoke tunnel infrastructure solutions.

Fire & Life-Safety
High-risk applications such as road or rail tunnels often require quick evacuation to get to safety, however a threat may occur on either side of the tunnel door. Allowing for panic egress in both directions is therefore crucial to help protect the public (EN 1125) and personnel (EN 179) in the event of an emergency, providing a single handed cross passage escape. Below are some of our fire and life-safety solutions best-suited for use within tunnel infrastructure.

Cross Passage Slimline
Surelock McGill have designed and manufactured a highly reliable door bolting system that operates in both directions and is third party certified to EN 1125 and EN 179. Our double acting doors (cross passage life-safety egress) allow single action escape on both sides, and with 316 grade stainless steel construction the system maintains high levels of durability and wear resistance for use within high-corrosive environments. With the introduction of the ‘infinite’ restraint the 15mm square bolts are held in position throughout opening travel, even when the bolt has only been partially retracted, to ensure the door returns to its secured position.
Double acting panic and emergency escape
- Certified single action escape from either direction
- Third party certified to EN 1125 & EN 179 in both directions
- Surface mounted only
- Available on single or double doorsets
- Made from Stainless-Steel grade 316
Highly reliable, cross passage, door bolting system that operates in both directions.

Aluminium Panic Bar
The aluminium panic bar is an ideal and cost effective solution where emergency escape hardware is needed, however high-pressure resistance is not a priority.
Cost effective emergency escape hardware.

Round Stainless-Steel Panic Bar
As an alternative panic device, the round stainless steel panic bar is suitable for use in high-corrosive environments and on high pressure doors, particularly important in traffic tunnels where train pressures are high. The rounded tubular design reduces the chance of the bar being depressed when exposed to a high pressure.
For use in high-corrosive environments and on high pressure doors.

High Performance Hinges
Surelock McGill hinges are designed for heavy duty security, blast and ballistic doorsets. Offering unrivalled levels of load carrying capability, these hinges have been successfully security tested to LPS 1175 security levels SR 2, 3 and 4 on selected doorsets. Manufactured from 316 grade stainless steel for high levels of durability and wear resistance within high-corrosive environments.

Vision Panels
When moving from one tunnel to another, visibility of potential traffic can be crucial for the safety of public and personnel. Surelock McGill Vision Panels have been designed to provide visibility through doors alongside protection against blast, ballistic, security and fire threats. They are ideal for use on high-performance doors generally helping to provide a compliant fire escape door solution.
- Allows visibility of potential traffic when moving from one tunnel to anotherFully
- Stainless-Steel frame available for longevity within high-corrosive environments
- Frame is constructed from heavy duty steel for multi-threat resistance
- Fire tested to EN 1634-1 E30 Uni-directional, E90 uni-directional or E90 bi-directional
High performance, heavy duty vision panels resistant to blast, ballistic and security attacks.
Tunnel Pressures
As trains and traffic have continued to run faster, pressure waves associated with passing trains are becoming increasingly important to consider when specifying access hardware. Below are some of our high-pressure environment access solutions.

Bolt Ends
Reinforced guide brackets and bolt ends ensure secure closure of doors within high pressure environments such as tunnels. With up to four levels of guide and bolt enhancements available, there is a solution for most situations.
Tapered bolt ends and specialist keeps can also be supplied to provide a tight seal onto the door frame, reducing the movement of air and sound from within a tunnel to the outside.

Slimline Blast Enhancement Bolts
- D15
- Peak Pressure of 166 kPa / 24.1 PSI
- D25
- Peak pressure of 1108 kPa / 160.7 PSI

Cam-lift Hinges
A global rise in interest for our high quality, traditional, & unique cam-lift hinges, originally designed for the rugged off-shore oil & gas platforms has brought further improvements to this classic design for even smoother operation and long term-durability.
A suitable solution for tunnel doors, our range of pivot and cam-lift hinges allow even heavy doors above 3500KG to lift off their seals and release pressure for smooth opening operation. When used in conjunction with a Surelock McGill Slimline locking system these hinges provide the perfect sealed door solution.

Round Stainless-Steel Panic Bar
The round stainless steel panic bar is a suitable panic device for use in high-corrosive environments and on high pressure doors, particularly important in traffic tunnels where train pressures are high. The rounded tubular design reduces the chance of the bar being depressed when exposed to a high pressure.

Sliding Door
When tunnel pressures are high and space is limited, a sliding door can often be the desired solution for providing access between tunnels to public and personnel. A sliding door can combat the risk of a door swinging out due to the pressure forces within a tunnel, and reduce the possibility of obstructing access areas.

Moorgate
The Moorgate is a suitable solution when a sliding door is the best option. An auto-securing, twin hook deadlock is used to lock both internal and external sliding or hinged gates, doors and hatches. The Moorgate offers both electronic access control and key entry provisions. When closed, it automatically re-engages and deadlocks.
- 3 to 7 bolting positions
- Typically mortice fitted, but can be surface mounted
- LPS 1175 SR3
Auto-securing, twin hook deadlock.

Coniston
The Coniston is a highly reliable, heavy duty, manually thrown deadbolt for use on one or two point applications. A suitable surface mounted alternative to a more integrated lock such as the Moorgate. The range offers high levels of pressure resistance ideal for withstanding high-pressure waves associated with passing trains and traffic. With a choice of three bolt sizes: 15, 25 and 50mm square and a bolt throw of up to 200mm. Manufactured in 316 grade stainless steel for hostile environments and durability.
- Internal only, manually operated
- One or two point bolting
- Bolt throw up to 200mm
- Surface mounted

Electronic Solutions
Electronic locking solutions are an effective way to quickly allow monitoring and control of doors across multiple tunnels, from within one control room.
Access Control
Access control allows the restriction of doors that can be accessed by personnel and audit checking of who has accessed an area and when. Alongside this, security teams are able to monitor the bolt and deadlock status of a locking system from within the control room and ensure all doors are closed securely without the need to travel the length of the tunnel to manually check individual doors.
